In 2007, Dr. Brian Abert and Dr. Deanna Pedroza were going to school at the Southern California College of Optometry in Fullerton, California.  Brian entered a contest (and won!) with this project about a dinosaur that visits him and educates him on eye health and vision.  We’ve shown our younger patients the printed copy in the exam room, but we thought it would be fun to share it here!

I think that if a giant dinosaur head poked into my bedroom window early in the morning I would be more scared that happy!

Truly healthy sight is more than just being able to read black and white letters. The real world is full of challenging visual situations, and a person with truly healthy vision will feel comfortable throughout their daily activities of work and play.

Driving is among the most demanding visual activities. Driving takes place day and night and under a tremendous variety of conditions. You can help improve your vision by keeping your best eyewear on while driving. Night vision can also be improved by wearing your prescribed glasses. Polarized lenses are a fantastic technology that greatly reduces the reflections and glare seen by the patient. Polarized lenses are ideal for driving and the outdoors.

Impact resistant lenses are important for children. Many states make impact resistant, or “polycarbonate,” lenses a legal requirement for minors, and with good reason. Polycarbonate lenses are lighter in weight, block all ultraviolet light, and protect the eyes of their wearers.

Photochromics are a useful technology that changes the tint of the lenses based on the wearer’s surrounding light conditions. Outside in the sun, photochromic lenses turn comfortably dark, while inside they turn clear. Photochromics offer the convenience of sunglasses and high quality indoor optics all in the same frame.

Symptoms of discomfort and glare can be reduced with a good anti-reflective coating. This coating keeps the wearer’s vision crisp and clear, reducing the haloes often seen with many prescriptions. As an added bonus, people looking at a person wearing lenses with an anti-reflective coating will be able to see the wearer’s eyes more easily.

Just like ultraviolet (UV) light causes your skin to sunburn, it likewise causes long-lasting damage to the retina in the back of your eyes. It’s important for patients to be aware that UV exposure has been linked with diseases such as macular degeneration. Preventing UV damage is as easy as wearing lenses that block all the UV light entering your eyes.

Diet and exercise are important components of healthy vision. Eating foods rich in antioxidants and vitamins, such as dark green leafy vegetables, can help keep your eyes healthy. Much like maintaining a healthy body, eyes are also greatly benefited by regular exercise.

Regular visits to your optometrist can help detect vision problems early. While many vision-affecting diseases are out there, the majority can be prevented or their impact reduced through regular eye examinations. Eye exams are recommended once yearly for children and older folks, and once every two years for middle aged folks.
