Vista Eye Care is pleased to offer optomap® retinal imaging to all our patients as part of their annual comprehensive eye and vision examination.  The Optos is a state-of-the-art laser ophthalmoscope that captures an image of virtually the entire retina.  This retinal image is an effective tool that we use to diagnosis and manage eye disease.  Early diagnosis is critical as many early retinal diseases have no symptoms.  The optomap® images we take of our patient’s retinas make our eye exams faster and more thorough.

This image demonstrates what the Optos 200dx scanning ophthalmoscope looks like

The Optos 200Dx is big -and does a very big job in that it scans nearly the entire retina in (quite literally) the blink of an eye!

Dr. Brian Abert, O.D., FAAO, co-founding doctor of Vista Eye Care, explains the importance of this new technology to his patients: “Most patients think they only need an eye exam when there has been a change to their glasses prescription.  The reality is that the retinal examination is probably the most important part of their annual check-up.  Taking an optomap® image provides me with a permanent digital image which I can manipulate and magnify, giving me a comprehensive view of the back of the eye.  This allows me to better and more effectively discover abnormalities that might be present.  Best of all, I get to review the image with each patient and explain good preventative eye care using their own retinas as an example!”

The optomap® image-taking process is non-invasive and captures an instant, ultra-widefield digital scan of the retina, revealing important information regarding the patient’s ocular health.  The 200-degree internal scan is captured in a quarter of a second and allows for enhanced clinical care, increased patient satisfaction, and greater practice efficiency.  While not always a substitute for pupillary dilation, the optomap® image does extend quite far into the peripheral retina.  Our optometrists will check your retinal images for early eye disease like glaucoma, retinal holes, blood vessel abnormalities, macular degeneration, and optic nerve disorders.  Systemic diseases often affect eye health and vision, and include diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol all of which can be evident on the optomap®.

Our eye doctors encourage all our patients to make Optos part of their yearly eye exam.  Taking an optomap® image is easily accomplished and safe for patients of all ages.  The best ocular disease prevention is early education and detection, and the optomap® is just what the doctor ordered.
