What Is Laser Eye Surgery?

Laser eye surgery is a popular method for correcting refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. By reshaping the cornea — the clear front part of the eye — laser surgery can improve how light rays are focused onto the retina, resulting in clearer vision. There are two primary types of laser eye surgery:

01

LASIK—This is the most common laser eye surgery. During the procedure, the surgeon creates a thin flap on the surface of the cornea, which they then lift to allow the laser to reshape the underlying corneal tissue. They then reposition the flap, and healing occurs.

02

PRK—In PRK, instead of creating a flap, the surgeon completely removes the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) to expose the underlying corneal tissue. They then use a laser to reshape the cornea. After the procedure, the epithelium regenerates over a few days.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Eye Surgery?

Not everyone is a suitable candidate for laser eye surgery. Ideal candidates generally:

  • Are at least 18 years old with stable vision for at least a year
  • Have a healthy cornea and sufficient corneal thickness
  • Have a refractive error within a treatable range
  • Are in good overall health and free from conditions that could affect healing
  • Are not pregnant or nursing
  • Have realistic expectations about the outcomes and potential risks

During your consultation at Vista Eye Care, we’ll conduct a thorough evaluation to determine if you’re a good candidate for laser eye surgery.
