What Are Specialty Lenses?

Specialty contact lenses are far from a one-size-fits-all solution. These custom-made lenses aim to meet the unique needs of patients who cannot achieve optimal vision or comfort with standard lenses. Unlike traditional lenses, they specifically address irregular corneas, provide better vision for patients with specific eye conditions, or offer enhanced comfort for those with unique requirements.

01

RGP Lenses—Rigid gas-permeable lenses are rigid lenses that allow oxygen to pass through to the cornea, offering excellent visual acuity and durability. These lenses are ideal for patients with astigmatism, keratoconus, or those who require sharper vision correction. RGP lenses are custom-fitted to the shape of your cornea.

02

Scleral Lenses—These lenses are larger in diameter and rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye), vaulting over the cornea. This design creates a tear-filled reservoir that provides comfort and clarity, particularly for patients with severe dry eye, keratoconus, or other corneal irregularities. These lenses offer enhanced stability and a customized fit.

03

Ortho-K LensesOrthokeratology lenses are rigid lenses worn overnight to reshape the cornea. When you remove the lenses in the morning, your cornea retains the new shape, allowing you to see clearly without needing glasses or contacts. Ortho-k lenses are particularly beneficial for patients with mild to moderate myopia.

04

Soft Multifocal Lenses—These lenses correct presbyopia, a condition that affects near vision as we age. They feature multiple zones of correction for near, intermediate, and distance vision, allowing for a smooth transition between different distances. These lenses are ideal for patients who want the convenience of contact lenses without needing reading glasses or bifocals.

05

Toric Lenses—These lenses correct astigmatism, which occurs when the cornea has an irregular shape. Unlike standard lenses, which are spherical, toric lenses have different powers in different meridians of the lens to provide clear vision at all distances. These lenses are available in both soft and RGP materials and are custom-fitted to ensure they stay in place on the eye.

Fitting Specialty Lenses in Thornton

Fitting specialty contact lenses requires a higher level of expertise and care than standard lenses. Our eye doctors take the time to assess your eyes and vision needs. We use advanced diagnostic tools to map the surface of your cornea, ensuring your lenses fit precisely for optimal comfort and clarity.

During your appointment, we’ll discuss your lifestyle, vision challenges, and any requirements you have. We aim to create a customized solution that improves your vision and enhances your overall quality of life.
